Czech Republic Mulls Social Media Restrictions for Under-Fifteen
Prime Minister Andrej Babis said the government is seriously considering such a measure, taking inspiration from France’s recent legislation. He emphasized the need for immediate action to protect children, stating: “I’m in favor of a ban, because the experts I know all say it is extremely harmful. We must do something to protect our children.”
Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlicek noted that consultations with experts and telecommunications operators are already underway to determine how a ban could be implemented. He indicated that legislation could be proposed later this year, saying: “We definitely won’t drag this out and would like to propose a ban already this year. There’s no time to waste. Social networks are destroying children’s lives; it’s starting to become a plague.”
The discussion in the Czech Republic follows similar moves in other countries. Australia prohibited social media access for children under 16 last December, while France passed a law last month restricting social media use for those under 15.
