Czech Republic to Tighten Benefits for Ukrainian Refugees

(MENAFN) The Czech government is preparing to introduce stricter requirements for Ukrainian refugees seeking humanitarian welfare assistance, according to reports published Monday. The planned changes form part of a wider legislative package focused on security and administrative oversight.

The ruling coalition, which includes the ANO movement, the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party, and the Motorists party, intends to tighten the conditions under which refugees granted temporary protection can qualify for financial support.

According to reports, most elements of the proposed legislation are expected to take effect early next year. However, the revised welfare provisions are scheduled to be implemented later, beginning on Jan. 1, 2028.

Officials said the delayed rollout is intended to give labor offices and digital administrative systems adequate time to prepare for and integrate the new procedures.

Under the proposal, authorities would receive expanded powers to verify whether recipients continue to satisfy the eligibility requirements for humanitarian assistance.

Interior Minister Lubomir Metnar said the planned reforms are designed to improve oversight and help curb what authorities describe as “benefit tourism.”
